"[...] Returning late one night from the battle front, the voyevoda finds his wife absent from the house. Possessed with jealousy, he motions his aide to follow him and they make their way stealthily to the garden. The voyevoda's wife, clad in a white negligee, is seated by the fountain. A man lies at her feet. He speaks: 'Thy soft bosoms are sold to the voyevoda. Sigh for a woman he could not; the clink of his money brought thee to him. I have come just this one last time to see you, and then I must fly from your sight forever.' The woman weeps and then begins to moan. The voyevoda draws closer and instructs the aide to aim his carbine at her 'faithless forehead' and await his signal to fire, while he himself will dispose of her lover in similar fashion. He motions. A shot rings out. The aide has aimed badly. The voyevoda falls dead. [...]"

"[...] the Voyevoda [...] is especially notable in two respects, its orchestration and its rhythm. Instead of the typically brilliant instrumentation justly associated with Tchaikovsky we find here an impressionistic effect almost akin to late nineteenth century French music. One commentator, Ralph W. Wood, has noted an even closer resemblance to the style of Sibelius. The work is also distinctive rhythmically; as Edwin Evans has pointed out, 'It is not the type of rhythmical waywardness which finds its expression in unusual time signatures, but a spasmodic disintegration of the melodies, whilst the metre is almost unaltered, producing an unsettled effect, and conveying readily the impression of an acute mental struggle. It is as if, tired of the dynamic means he so frequently used to achieve his end, he had aimed at something more subtle.' Thus Tchaikovsky, who is so frequently cited as the prime example of a composer who never really developed, is seen to have been striving for different means of expression. It may be said that his aim was more accurate than that of his voyevoda. [...]".

Voici donc...
